Economic Development Group

The Economic Development Group is a coalition of organizations, institutions, and businesses working together to ensure that Nanaimo is a community of social and economic opportunity. EDG provides leadership and a collective voice for economic development issues impacting Nanaimo. In 1999 EDG developed and embraced an Economic Development Strategy that guides Nanaimo into the future.

EDG is guided by a steering committee which meets monthly to review projects and strategies that are being developed. This information is communicated to the EDG membership at quarterly meetings, which are attended by the entire membership.

The Economic Development Office works with a number of community organizations to advance projects that are key to the long-term diversification of the local economy.

Leading EDG Awards Nomination Forms
The Leading EDG Awards recognize individuals, businesses and organizations that have taken actions that support the goals of the strategy, contributing to make Nanaimo one of the most desirable, livable small cities in North America.

To nominate someone in any of the six categories, download and fill out the Nomination Form.  Save the form and e-mail it to economic.development@nanaimo.ca, or print and fax it to 250-755-4404.  Deadline for nominations is September 16, 2008.


Steering Committee
The steering committee meets every month to review projects and strategies that achieve the goals of the Economic Development Strategy.

The 2008 Steering Committee includes:

EDG Inititiatives
The Economic Development Strategy is implemented through the collective efforts of EDG partners.  Since the launch of the strategy in 1999 EDG members have endorsed the strategy, and formed community teams lead by "champions".  These community teams have committed resources and implemented actions that support the strategy goals.

Vancouver Island Conference Centre

Located in Nanaimo's historic downtown and one block from a spectacular harbourfront, the Vancouver Island Conference Centre will offer 38,000 square feet of flexible function spaces and will accommodate meetings, conferences and events for up to 1000 people.

In addition to the conference centre's facility, delegates and event attendees can access the adjacent 800 seat Port Theatre which is fully equipped for any presentation. The new Nanaimo Museum, located one level below the main function spaces, will provide event organizers and attendees a unique venue for receptions and dinners. Conference plenaries are located in the state-of-the-art Shaw Auditorium.  The entire facility located in Nanaimo's revitalized downtown, is known as the Port of Nanaimo Centre.
